Approved by the FDA in the 1990’s, laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to end shaving, waxing, tweezing, razor burn and stubbles. Almost all areas of the body for men and women can be treated, including underarms, face, neck, chest, back and bikini line.

Hair removal is performed with a handheld device that goes over the skin and releases a controlled flash of light containing hundreds of wavelengths to target the hair follicle under the skin. The light turns into heat and destroys the follicle without harming the surrounding tissue and skin. Because this process only works on hair follicles that are in their active growth stage, a series of 6-10 treatments must be done at intervals of 5-8 week apart as more hairs enter their active stage. Some patients with certain medical conditions require more treatments or touch up treatments one to two years after their last treatment. Factors such as aging, pregnancy, hypothyroidism or other hormonal imbalances can cause excessive hair growth.

The treatment time depends on the size of the area being targeted. Small areas like the upper lip or chin take only a few minutes while the whole back may take up to 2 hours. When the light is emitted from the machine, patients feel a quick pinch similar to being snapped by a small rubber band. The feeling is temporary and is reported by many patients to be less painful than waxing. Some areas are more sensitive than others but we numb the area with ice prior to treatment.

Laser IPL is most effective on patients with dark hair and light skin. It is NOT effective on dark skin or hair with no pigment (blonde, white or gray). It can also not be done on areas with a sunburn, or if you are on any medication that makes your skin sensitive to light. The area to be treated must be shaved prior to coming into the office and should NOT be tweezed or waxed a month before treatment. After each treatment, you should stay out of the sun and avoid hot tubs and extreme exercise that causes excessive sweating for 24 hours.

We require a patch test prior to treatment to make sure your skin does not have any sensitivity to the light. Possible side effects include temporary redness or itching, similar to a sunburn, but are only temporary. Contact the clinic immediately if any discomfort or side effects do not subside.

Certification by the Joint Commission is one of the highest accomplishments in demonstrating quality of care in the healthcare industry, especially in the fallout of last year's Florida PIP legislation.
